You should cite an UpToDate topic as you would a chapter in a book. Unless you are required to use a particular style, the citation should follow AMA style rules and include:

  • Author: List the authors named on the topic page
  • Year: List the year that the topic was last updated
  • Title: List the title of the topic
  • Editor: Connor RF should be listed as the editor, as she is the Senior Director of Clinical Content for UpToDate
  • Book Title: UpToDate
  • Publisher: Wolters Kluwer
  • Accessed Date: List the date on which you accessed the content

Example citation:

George S, Razak A. Overview of the initial treatment of metastatic soft tissue sarcoma. In: Connor R, ed. UpToDate. Wolters Kluwer; 2024. Accessed October 24, 2024.

If you are using EndNote, you must create a new reference for an UpToDate topic.

  1. In EndNote, got to References > New Reference
  2. A new window will open. Start by changing the Reference Type to Electronic Book Section.
  3. Enter data for the Author, Year, Title, Editor, Book Title, Publisher, and Access Date fields. Enter this information as instructed above.
  4. Click on the Save button.
  5. Close the window.

Please note that the formatted version of the EndNote citation will not look exactly like the example Wolters Kluwer shares on their website, but this is the closest match EndNote is capable of making.
