EndNote offers 3 online versions of its product: EndNote Online, EndNote Web, and EndNote Basic. Differences between these versions are outlined below.

The library recommends that MD Anderson students, staff, and faculty use EndNote Online as it is the most robust option. The EndNote desktop software is available to all employees from the institution's Software Center. First, download the desktop software. Next, register for an EndNote Online account. Finally, add your EndNote Online account credentials to your desktop application (Edit > Preferences > Sync > add credentials).

  • This version is only available to those who have purchased the EndNote desktop software (any version).
  • The desktop application can be synced to this online account.
  • This online account can be accessed from any computer with a connection to the Internet.
  • This version includes the online search feature. This feature allows users to search thousands of resources, like PubMed, for references directly from the online account interface. 
  • This version allows users to create Groups for organizing references. 
  • This version includes the Share feature. This feature allows users to share Groups with other EndNote users. 
  • Reference capacity: 1 million references
  • File attachment capacity: Unlimited 
  • Output styles: 7,000+

EndNote Web (web.endnote.com)

  • This version is only available to those who have purchased the EndNote 21 desktop software.
  • The desktop application can be synced to this online account.
  • This online account can be accessed from any computer with a connection to the Internet.
  • This version does not include the online search feature. This feature allows users to search thousands of resources, like PubMed, for references directly from the online account interface. 
  • This version allows users to create Group Sets & Groups for organizing references. 
  • This version does not include the Share feature. This feature allows users to share Groups with other EndNote users. 
  • Reference capacity: 1 million references
  • File attachment capacity: Unlimited 
  • Output styles: 7,000+

EndNote Basic (myendnoteweb.com)

  • This version is available to anyone. No purchase of the EndNote desktop software is required. 
  • This online account can be accessed from any computer with a connection to the Internet.
  • This version includes a limited version of the online search feature. This feature allows users to search 5 resources for references directly from the online account interface. 
  • This version allows users to create Groups for organizing references. 
  • This version includes the Share feature. This feature allows users to share Groups with other EndNote users. 
  • Reference capacity: 50,000 references
  • File attachment capacity: 2 GB
  • Output styles: 21 most popular
