The designated Reviewer is responsible for providing initial and final approvals. Instructions and a link to the submission awaiting approval are provided in an email sent to the Reviewer from NIHMS. An email is sent for each approval - Initial and Final.

Initial Approval

  1. Click on the link in the email to access the submission awaiting your review.

  2. Review the information on the Review Submission page. Click Next to approve or click Reject Submission, if you do not approve.

  3. If applicable funding has not already been added to the submission, click Search Funding to add it. You can search by award ID or awardee name.

  4. Next, review all the associated manuscript files. Click Next if they are complete. Click Reject Submission, if any files are missing.

  5. Review the Release Delay (i.e., embargo). Click Next to proceed.

  6. Read the Submission Statement. Click Agree, if all the information is correct.

  7. You will be routed to a confirmation page that provides information about the manuscript. Next, the submission will be converted for inclusion in PubMed Central. Typically, this step takes 2-3 weeks. Once this step is complete, you will receive an email with instructions about providing the final approval.

Be aware that if you need to Reject the Submission, you must select a reason and provide an explanation.

Final Approval

  1. Click on the link in the email to access the record (i.e., the PMC ready version of the manuscript) awaiting your review.
  1. Review the PMC Web view. Click More to see the associated persons, awards, and files to compare. Click on the closest red location marker to report an error.
  1. Next, review the PMC PDF view. Click the Add Error button to report an error.
  1. Click Approve, if no errors are found.
  1. You will be routed to a confirmation page that provides information about the manuscript. If the manuscript is successfully approved, a PMCID will soon be assigned to it.
