When linking ORCiD to SciENcv/NCBI, you must be logged into the primary account (i.e., the faculty member or PI's account). An NCBI delegate cannot link an ORCiD account.

NCBI says my account is already linked. What do I do?

When trying to link ORCiD to SciENcv/NCBI, if you receive a message that says your account cannot be linked because it is already linked to another account, you should try the following:

  1. Open your browser and open an Incognito window (Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome or Ctrl+Shift+P in Firefox).
    • FYI, the incognito window allows you to login to the ORCiD account so you can reset the linking.
  2. Go to https://account.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ and click ORCiD (You may need to choose Other login options in order to see ORCiD).
  3. Sign in with the faculty member's ORCID credentials. Once signed in, this will take you to the account that the ORCID is linked to.
  4.  Go to the Account Settings page (https://account.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/settings/). Look under Linked Accounts.
  5. If there is more than 1 account listed under Linked Accounts, click the trashcan symbol to delete ORCID.
    • If you cannot delete ORCID, you may need to link an additional account by following these steps:
      1. Click Add account under Linked Accounts. This will open a new window where you can search from a large list of 3rd party partners.
      2. At this point, you'll want to search for and add an account that is NOT linked to your preferred NCBI account. For instance, if you've already linked your eRA Commons account to your preferred NCBI account, you'll need to link Gmail or another account here.
      3. You will go through the steps to connect with Duo authentication. Enter the numbers on your phone and the screen will refresh on the Account settings page.
      4. On the Account settings page, scroll down to Linked Accounts again. You will see 2 accounts now. Click the trashcan next to ORCID to delete the ORCID account link.

Link ORCID to Faculty/PI SciENcv

  1. Next, open a browser window that is NOT incognito. Go to the Account Settings.
  2. Login with Faculty/PI eRA Commons or Login.gov
  3. Scroll down to Linked Accounts and click Add account.
  4. In the 3rd party account window, search for ORCID. Click the suggested link and sign in with Faculty/PI ORCID credentials. The page will refresh and ORCID will be added to the Linked Accounts in your Account Settings.
  5. Go to the SciENcv page (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/sciencv/). Click the Edit pencil next to the faculty profile name.
  6. Next to ORCID ID, click on Select here to link your ORCID ID. Enter your ORCID credentials, then click the blue Save button.
  7. Go to the relevant SciENcv form (Biosketch, OS document etc.) under Documents. In the pop-up window, scroll down to the bottom. Under Persistent Identifier (PID) of the Senior/Key Person click the blue link to bring in your ORCID number. It should automatically retrieve it. Click the blue Save button.
  8. 13. If you are editing more than one document, double check each one to see that the ORCID is present.
