  • Some journals have an agreement with the NIH to submit articles where the author chooses the journal's fee-based open-access optionIn this method, the final published article is submitted to PMC by the journal, but the authors must ensure the submission process is completed by the journal. Journals with this agreement with the NIH can be searched for here. 
  • Some journals automatically submit to PMC on the author's behalf and require no action by the author. These journals are known as "participating journals". Journals that submit to PMC automatically can be searched for here.  
  • If the publisher will not submit on the author's behalf, an author of the paper or PI must submit the paper via the NIHMS system.
